Power Struggle in Spain

The chess game, which symbolizes the power struggle in Spain, started by Pedro Sánchez to govern Spain and avoid a PP government in any form, led to the bringing together of a conglomerate of political groups championed by a thousand and one demands, around the figure of Pedro Sanchez, who had to negotiate and grant the perks demanded by them to maintain his position as Supreme Leader of the Government of the Spanish nation.

Once this first phase has been passed, and the position has been officially granted, the time has come to comply with the accepted demands, putting in place all the necessary machinery, without skimping on public, personal, tactical or strategic means. , which could hinder the established roadmap.

In this roadmap, the main circumstance is the treatment and approval of the perks given to the insidious Catalan independence supporters, who aspire to erase all traces of crime from their files due to the events that occurred a few years ago, which however are willing to repeat as soon as the opportunity arises.

Being in these, suddenly the current president of the still Catalan Autonomous Community, an aspiring republic, and belonging to the political force Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, a staunch opponent of the party led by the Independentista and a current fugitive of the Spanish justice Carles Puigdemont, seeing the ears of the wolf coming, and taking advantage of the situation that the denial of the approval of his budgets offered him by his partners in En Comun Podem (the Catalan version of Podemos), has not wasted the opportunity to carry out a strategic move with unfathomable consequences.

With a mastery worthy of praise, he has made a rapid movement with which he has changed the scenario of Catalan politics and therefore of Spanish politics, as he has not only managed to prevent the possibly future amnestied person and Leader of the opposing party, Carles Puigdemont, from could lead to the next Catalan elections, but has also put the Multicultural Government of the nation’s president, Pedro Sanchez, in a difficult position.

Thus, with the early call for elections in Catalonia for next May, it makes the candidacy of the leader of Junts for Catalonia and maximum exponent of the Catalan independence movement impossible, and has also forced the Central Government of Spain to immediately extend the budgets for the year 2023 for this year, and forget the presentation of the budgets for the current year, understanding that the fratricidal fight between the Catalan political organizations would not result in obtaining the majority necessary for the approval of any account that was presented.

But even further, this strategic movement carried out by the Catalan government will mean that certain investments, and the development of certain laws, cannot be consummated, as they are strictly related to the approval of general budgets on which they would be supported, such as the case of the investment plans announced in housing or defense, but above all it affects the debt reduction mechanism of the autonomies, which must now be carried out by the Tax Agency, in a more complex, slow and expensive way, or in its defect be processed through the now famous decrees of law.

Along with this maneuver, the Basque elections in April, where it will be necessary to exceed the threshold of 37 seats to be able to form a government and where it is expected that the socialist forces of the Psoe will become the key to the governability either with the PNV or with EH Bildu, could mean in any case a wake-up call to the Spanish central government, as the Basque nationalist parties choose, following the example of the Catalan executive, to increase their political demands, if they increase its power in its autonomy.

All of this, with the risk of a Catalan front, which, being aware of its necessary radicalization to increase its chances of victory in the Catalan elections, may choose to further radicalize its demands on its government partners, and even cause a loss of representation or acceptance in Catalonia.

The new scenario is really relevant, since a Government move by calling elections and paralyzing the processing of the amnesty would change the scenario of the elections in Catalonia irremediably, establishing a scenario of stark struggle between the two pro-independence parties. Catalans, and definitively making it impossible for the Junts leader to return to Spain, as well as the “efforts” made in recent months to bring harmony to Catalonia, as they say, finally breaking the rope from so much tension and giving the Psoe the opportunity to sell their “efforts” as their own success and a failure of the Catalan independence parties.

Similarly, the withdrawal of the Catalans from the Government of Pedro Sánchez once the Catalan elections are over, would seriously affect their aspirations in future European elections, and would leave the government composed, but without the capacity to any management, as all their proposals can be overturned by the opposition parties and the disengaged Catalan group, by denying them in the vote.

Thus, in the coming months we will be perplexed to witness a power struggle where the interests of citizens, the real problems that affect them, and the needs to be fulfilled by the commitments acquired with Europe and other nations, organizations and institutions, will remain relegated to the drawer of memories, until the moment in which it is duly settled who will truly be the Ruler of the Court with sufficient support in each territory, which in the end seems to be the only thing really important for the components and members of the forces policies of the kingdom of Spain and the conglomerate of governments formed by its Autonomous Communities.
