Quality, a Matter of Individual Perspective

Have you ever wondered what quality really means?

Quality is a complex concept that depends greatly on the perspective of each individual, it is a personal appreciation that each individual makes of a product, service, experience or situation. For some, quality implies excellence, the highest standards and perfection. For others, it is simply a matter of whether a product or service meets their basic needs.

Quality is not absolute, it exists in the eyes of the consumer, and is based on the consumer’s own values, beliefs and expectations. It is easy to discover that something that one person considers of poor quality is excellent for another, by satisfying factors such as usefulness, functionality, appearance, price, or user experience…

Quality is related to the individual perception of each individual, and subject to psychological and emotional factors, varying from one person to another depending on the experiences, values and preferences of each of them.

Quality reflects consumers’ perception of products and services, a perception that can influence purchasing decisions, customer satisfaction, and brand loyalty. Consumers evaluate the quality of a product or service based on their needs, estimating that it is high when it exceeds the consumer’s expectations, normally formed from previous experiences, comments from others, advertising and price.

In the appreciation of quality, elements such as the brand, the reputation of the company, the high price, the country of origin, the senses intervene, so that the texture, the aroma, or the Flavor can encourage enhancing the value of quality, and of course the emotions that may be associated with social status or pleasure, all of which are modifiers of the perception of quality.

Likewise, the experiences associated with human interaction can also provide an increase in the perception of quality, thus respectful, efficient, kind, friendly, polite or exciting treatment can contribute to improving the concept of the quality of the product or service. and vice versa, bad service or bad treatment can considerably reduce the value of the quality associated with a product or service.

The Importance of Experiences and the Immaterial

The quality of an experience depends largely on subjective factors that are unique to each individual.

Thus, the expectations that each person brings with them when interacting with a product or service largely determine their perception of quality. If your expectations are not met, the experience is likely to be considered low quality, regardless of objective attributes. On the contrary, if expectations are exceeded, the experience will be perceived as high quality.

The mood, circumstances and context in which the interaction occurs also influence the perception of quality. An experience that would normally be considered mediocre can be perceived as exceptional if it coincides with a particularly positive moment in our lives. Likewise, an unforgettable experience might seem insignificant if it occurs during a period of hardship.

Our core values, preferences and personal tastes shape our perceptions of quality in profound ways. What is important to some (price, convenience) may have no value to others (design, sustainability).

The concept of quality is related to the perspective from which each person looks at life, thus from a materialistic vision of life, focused on the acquisition of possessions and the satisfaction of physical desires, the elements and well-known brand products, associated with luxury and comfort, may seem to be of the highest quality. On the contrary, for a more spiritual person who values more immaterial experiences, human relationships and personal development, quality will not be linked to price, nor to the materials of the products, but perhaps to efficiency, functionality and real usefulness of things or services.

There are people for whom quality can be found in the simple, everyday details, when they focus on the small things that give meaning to life, finding greater meaning and purpose.

Values such as kindness, empathy, treating others with respect and compassion, talking, laughing and creating memories, enjoying the small wonders that the natural world offers us, such as a sunrise, singing of birds or the smell of the earth after the rain, are elements that help raise the quality of a product or service.

Quality, in some way, is associated with the attitude with which each person faces each day and the way they perceive the environment, but quality is also a factor that helps people feel more comfortable, safe or productive, influencing in turn the way of seeing life, since it favors or increases feelings of happiness, joy and optimism, in such a way that the search and finding of high levels of quality (according to the individual expectations of each one), It encourages the individual to value their environment, the services they enjoy and the things and objects they use, with a higher level of quality, creating a circle that continually feeds itself.

When a person feels surrounded by low-quality objects and services, it is also possible that it is more difficult for them to appreciate quality objects or services, as they are influenced by their own feelings, potentially creating a vicious circle fueled by constant dissatisfaction.

An individual’s ability to assess the quality of the services and products around her may perhaps be useful to assess her level of satisfaction with her environment and her relationship with it.
