El Hoyo, Crude Sample of the Elevator of Life.

El Hoyo is a film that offers a crude example of the elevator of life, in which some of the problems of the capitalist system are exposed, and that provokes various reflections on our system of life, evidencing the class differences and contempt in some cases for some over others, blaming everyone for the selfish behavior adopted by everyone once they occupy the highest strata of society.

Distressing, crude, eschatological in some of its scenes, with violent passages but without becoming a horror film, directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia in 2019, produced by Netflix, and awarded at the People’s Choice Award for Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as at the Stiges Film Festival, where it was awarded best film, receiving the Goya Award for Best Special Effects.

The hole, a sign of the elevator of life

The medium of presentation is simple, food is the center of everything, the object of desire and the selfishly monopolized medium, so that the footage is based on the dilemma of eating to survive, the ultimate goal of each individual.

In the plot, Goreng, the protagonist, is in a vertical prison with two inmates per level, where the cells are facing each other and separated by a space through which a platform filled with the most exquisite dishes, sweets, desserts and fruits, which must be shared among all the prisoners, distributed in 333 levels, in which each month, at random, the prisoners are relocated.

Thus, the occupants of the upper floors monopolize the food by being the first to eat, even going so far as to spoil or break their own dishes on top of it in some situations in order to prevent access to it. the occupants of the lower floors, since from time to time the platform descends to the next level, repeating the ritual as it travels downwards through the following levels, where the prisoners are forced to eat the leftovers of their predecessors, being more evident as you descend.

Food is the only thing that matters, since the survival of each person depends on it, and where there is no communication or collaboration between those below or those above, preventing the creation of associations or organizations of any kind, crudely showing the lack of resources generated at the lower levels by the higher levels by wasting resources with their excesses.

The abuse committed by the occupants of the higher levels is such that they sometimes turn the members of the lower levels into people closer to animals than to people, becoming these unscrupulous beings capable of anything to survive.< /p>

However, from time to time, the prisoners are relocated inside the hole, and the one who was on the first levels may occupy one of the lower ones or vice versa, this situation producing the repetition of the behaviors, since the that rises in level, does not forget the suffering endured and repeats them, instead of trying to avoid them, thus managing to maintain an infinite loop, where those with the lowest level in the structure, have the worst access to the most necessary resources, in this case food, pillar of subsistence.

The film follows the story of Goreng (Iván Massagué), a man who wakes up on level 48, without remembering how he got there. Goreng teams up with Baharat (Zorion Agileor), a man who has learned to survive in the pit. Together, they try to find a way to break the cycle of violence and hunger.

The Hole is a film critical of capitalist society, using the structure of the hole as a metaphor for social inequality, in which the rich benefit from the resources of the poor, and in which the poor once manage to achieve status. and the capabilities of the upper classes, are corrupted over time by the privileges of their new situation, causing the beginning of abuse and consequently acting like the rich, forgetting past needs, sufferings and shortcomings.

The film also explores themes such as cooperation, exposing it as a possible strategy for survival, the ultimate goal of everyone and also, through the protagonists’ desire to find a way to break the cycle of violence and hunger, it talks about hope. As the inciting engine of action, decision-making and struggle, the system counts.
