Pontius Pilate and the island of the half moon, Ponza

The Island of Ponza, inhabited since the Neolithic and throughout the Roman era, received its name in honor of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who tried Jesus of Nazareth, although initially the island was called Tirrenia, known as the island of the half moon. . It was first colonized by the Etruscans, and was covered in lush forests of enormous trees with trunks more than eight feet wide.

During Roman times Nero Caesar, Caligula’s younger brother, was deported to Ponza, where he was executed in the year 30 AD, however in the Middle Ages the island was abandoned due to continuous looting by Saracens and pirates. During the 18th century, the kingdom of Naples recolonized the island, becoming part of the kingdom of Italy in the mid-19th century, currently forming part of the Republic of Italy.

This island, together with the island of Gavi, are the remains of the edge of the caldera of an extinct volcano, with an area of 7.3 km2, famous for its Blue Grottoes created by the Etruscans, such as the Grotto of the Serpents. The island has many visible archaeological ruins, including Greek, Roman and Phoenician necropolises.
