In today’s Spain, the political and social differences between the right and the left continue to be evident and generate intense debates and conflicts. To understand this scenario, it is necessary to take a historical overview and analyze the factors that have contributed to the emergence and strengthening of these disagreements in Spanish society.
After the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, Spain began a process of transition towards democracy, which was enshrined in the 1978 Constitution. During this period, a multiparty system was established that allowed the political participation of different ideological currents, including the right and the left. However, it was during these transition years that the first tensions and differences between both sectors began to emerge.
Spain’s Franco past left deep divisions and wounds in society. Francoism was an authoritarian regime with strong conservative and nationalist tendencies, which generated polarization between those who supported it and those who fought against it. As democracy was established, the left identified with anti-Francoism and sought a radical change in the political, social and economic aspects of the country, while the right defended Franco’s doctrine and advocated a softer continuity.
The economic and social development model adopted by Spain in the years after the Transition has also been a determining factor in shaping the differences between the right and the left. During socialist governments, welfare policies were promoted and strong state interventions in the economy were promoted, while conservative governments opted for liberal policies and greater openness to the market.
The territorial question has been another key element in the disagreements between the right and the left in today’s Spain. The defense of the unity or decentralization of the State have been points of constant friction. While the right defends a centralized and unitary vision of the country, the left tends to support the right to autonomy of the different autonomous communities.
Thus, while the left prioritizes collective well-being, the equitable distribution of wealth and the state as the owner or controlling entity of the means of production, the right advocates the well-being of the individual, the generation of wealth through individual effort and a economic sector based on the private sector and the free market.
The left is generally associated with ideas of equality, social justice and environmental protection, thus Left-wing parties often support policies such as increasing taxes on the rich, the expansion of social programs and the regulation of companies. Typically supports a more interventionist economy, with a greater role for government in market regulation and the provision of public services, promote equality and social justice, such as protecting minority rights and promoting diversity, as well as tolerance and inclusion, such as the defense of LGBTQ+ rights and the promotion of cultural diversity.
The right, on the other hand, is generally associated with ideas of individual freedom, personal responsibility and free markets, choosing to support policies such as reducing taxes, reducing government intervention in the economy and defends traditional values, prefers a freer economy, adopting low-interventionist positions, with a more limited role for the government in the economy, promotes policies that promote individual freedom and personal responsibility, such as reducing government regulations and defending of the traditional family.
The revolutionary theories of Marxism and its derivatives, or the most current theories of Eurocommunism or social democracy are theories opposed to the theories of conservatism, liberalism or the most modern pluralism, they are all empty theories with an infinite number of possible twists and turns in contemporary advanced societies.
In societies where each individual has recognized rights and obligations (more and more rights and fewer obligations), with increasingly egalitarian freedoms and opportunities, and where opportunities to create and generate wealth and assets are available to almost everyone equally, It may seem curious, anecdotal and even laughable that representatives of both ideological currents are not capable of reconsidering, thinking, analyzing and finding common ways capable of creating a path that leads their governed and fellow citizens to a better future.
It doesn’t matter, the merits that each of them have achieved, the social merits and the international synergies themselves, have managed to popularize countless taboo topics or repressed rights, such as divorce, abortion, recognition of gender variety and diversification. of individual sexuality, access to almost universal education and healthcare, are social benefits that impact the entire citizenry of a country.

Therefore, within the ideological theories of each of the exposed groups, left-handed or right-handed, there are countless points at which to find points of common support, capable of generating great regulatory and legislative norms that would facilitate life and would generate benefits for the entire population. It is possible to maintain life support structures that help the most disadvantaged, and those who have not been able to find or develop a life plan in line with their expectations and efforts, for whatever causes or reasons, but at the same time allowing the development and the scope of the degrees of wealth that correspond to those who have achieved it.
It may be correct and compatible that those who have more contribute more, it may be correct that companies that generate more contribute more, but also that these greater contributions do not grate on usury or abuse, and above all that the media used with the less wealthy, are aimed not only at making their lives easier, but, above all, at making it easier for them to choose to improve their lives with their effort and work.
It is more than likely that today we all want to improve our rights, and we want to opt for equal conditions between individuals and territories, issues of general interest that should not entail significant disruptions beyond those generated by brainless people anchored in extremist ideas, supported by true or falsified facts from more than fifty years ago.
A renowned psychologist said that the future will be the present in seconds and a memory in minutes, so let’s think about the future so that it occurs in our present, without looking too much at the memories other than to avoid repeating our mistakes.
Thus, the disagreements between the right and the left in Spain today have their roots in various historical and political, personal and selfish factors, from which the fight against Francoism, the differences economic and social, and the territorial question help to create the precise justifications, excuses and reasons, to continue with the consolidation of two opposing and competing political visions, outdated and obsolete in their own principles, instead of encouraging the leaving aside the recurring disagreements based on absurd ideologies and regret how to take advantage of these differences to generate coincidences, since it is more important to remember that dialogue and the search for consensus are fundamental for a peaceful and democratic coexistence, than promoting disagreements to create incompatibilities born of the most absolute selflessness and the deepest personal or collective selfishness.
The objective should be to find common ground and work together to build a more just, egalitarian and prosperous society; therefore, overcoming these disagreements requires a joint effort from all political and social actors, to promote mutual understanding and move towards a common future in which ideological differences are not insurmountable obstacles, but rather opportunities for growth and progress.
